The Weekly Standard reports the Environmentalists (Sierra Club) have turned on a proposal they supported to put an Alternative Energy Plant in the Mojave Desert. In 2009, the Stimulus provided $20 Billion to build alternative energy projects in the United States.
The Calico Solar project was to be built in the Mojave Desert about 100 miles from Los Angeles. The project was supposed to place 25,000 mirrored dishes each about 40 feet high and 38 feet wide on a 4600 acre site on public land controlled by the Department of the Interior. It wa supposed to produce 663.5 mega watts of electricity, enough to power 186,000 homes in LA.
Finally, they received approval from various State and Federal agencies to proceed. They include:
- California Energy Commission
- Department of the Interior
- Department of Energy
- Army Corps of Engineers
- Native American Tribes
Re-enter the Sierra club. They sued in State Court to block the Project to protect the Desert Tortoises, a species on the endangered animal list. Even though the State had built into the project a requirement to maintain 10,300 acres of desert that is hospitable to the tortoises. They are requiring fencing at the location and carefully picked necessary sites to support the activity at the plant.
One understated fact was there have only been 10 desert tortoises spotted in the projected project site. Similar suits have been filed by other environmental groups and Indian tribes against other solar sites.
It is best summed up by a quote from then Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger. referring to the Calico Solar Project he said ” I don’t know whether this is ironic or absurd, but, I mean, if we cannot put solar power plants in the Mojave Desert, I don’t know where in the hell we can put it.”
2012 is coming!!!! We need to take back the country
