The State Must Stop Forced Annexation

The new Republican Legislature must take the necessary steps to stop forced Annexing of properties by cities or towns. Up to now a City or Town could simply force an unincorporated section of a County to join the town or city. Local residents had no recourse.

Why would a City or Town do such a thing? it is simple, to increase their tax base. Homeowners and or businesses in those areas will end up paying additional taxes to the town or city on top of the county taxes they already pay. If you checked all the forced annexations that have occurred in the past decade,  I am confident no area annexed added to the burden of the town or city to run. Instead, the annexation brought in increased revenue with minimum additional costs to the city or town.

I am not against all annexation. Where the Local Government and the majority of residents agree it is a good idea, the annexation should be completed. However, it is immoral to force annexation on people and businesses when they get no economic or social benefit from the annexation. There is no justification to force annexation in order to build a town or cities tax base.

This should be a major issue for the new Republican Legislature to handle. By doing so, it will send a signal to all North Carolina residents things are going to be different. The age of big government is over in North Carolina. If some politicians do not understand, they can be replaced because 2012 is coming!!!!
