The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has announced it make a final decision on the drug Avastin on September 17th. The drug has been in use for years treating Cancer of the Brain, Breast, Lung, Lung, and Kidney. It works by preventing flow of blood to the tumour and thus delaying its growth for up to 5 months. It is not a cure, but does extend life.
The FDA approved the use of the drug in breast cancer when studies showed it extended life for up to 5 months. Recent studies indicate the life extension may be as little as a month. The drug costs $8000.00 a month to administrate to patients. There are currently 17,500 women in the United States taking the drug. They are part of the 40,000 women who die from breast cancer annually. It is second only to Cardiac Disease as the major killer of women in the United States.
The FDA panel recently voted 12-1 to drop the approval rating for the drug for breast cancer only. They claim it lacks effectiveness. It is in fact a cost cutting effectiveness. Without a FDA approval, insurance providers will not and do not have to cover the expense of the drug. Senator David Vitter from Louisiana has called this action ‘Rationing of Health Care”
I believe the President promised there would never be rationing of healthcare in the United States. The Democratic Congress made similar statements. Further when people like Sarah Palin called these panels ” Death Panels” it was attacked and called a radical and unfounded statement.
It seems to me that denying any patient an extra 1-5 months of life is rationing and in fact the panel is deciding when people will die. Cost savings or a “Death Panel” ? You Decide!!!!
Unfortunately this is the tip of an iceberg. Premiums for Health Insurance are already rising. Obama Care was supposed to keep the costs lower. Unfortunately, I fear the worst is yet to surface. We have been lied to by the Administration and the Democratic Congress. Remember this because:
November is coming………..
