In my opinion the worst action or inaction a leader can take is one based on politics. Couple that to an issue involving “The War on Terror”, and you risk peoples lives for political gain.
I am referring to the Eric Holder and his Justice Department’s decision to delay the announcement of the Khalid Sheikh Mohammed’s( KSM) trial location until after the mid-term elections. As the confessed mastermind of the 9-11 plot, his trial is of major importance to our nation and the people around the world including terrorists or potential terrorists.
The State and the City of New York has already spoken. For many reason, they do not want the trial in New York as was previously announced. Three months ago Attorney General Holder indicated the decision as to where the trial would be held was weeks away. Could the phrase ” mid-term elections” be the operative phrase in the decision?
Given the possibility of major gains by the Republican Party, delaying the decision will help Democrats survive what appears to be a rough election year for their candidates. The Democrats need every Liberal in their base to vote and cannot afford to turn off any additional voters in that base. President Obama, as a candidate, had promised trials for terrorists would be held in civil court not in military tribunals. With the refusal of New York to hold the trials, it becomes more likely KSM will be have his day in court in a military tribunal. In Moderate or Swing States, democratic candidates cannot afford any controversal issues surfacing that might further turn off a disappointed base. They need every vote if they have any hope of being re-elected.
Meanwhile, the World watches and questions our resolve. How can we be committed to winning this “War on Terror” when we can not even announce where and when the Mastermind of 9-11 will be tried, nine years after the attack? How can we be taken seriously when we put political advantage ahead of world perception on our committment to the war? If we are more afraid of losing power than winning a war that threatens the existence of this nation, we need to change the Washington power structure.
We need to elect people who put the needs of the nation ahead of political or personal gain. The mid-term elections are indeed important, Maybe we can elect leaders who work on the ideal of “Country First”
