Finally after almost two months the US government has sat down with the leadership of BP. As reported, the President scheduled the meeting for twenty minutes of his time, and actually stayed for 40 minutes of the 4 hours of meeting. Maybe if BP met him at a golf course or in Hawaii or Chicago he might have invested additional time for a crisis that is a national disaster, according his own words.
His staff did manage to get BP to commit 20 Billion dollars to a fund for payments for the clean up and loss of income. Kudos for that. However, the President stated the money will be handled by a third-party to ensure fair and quicker responses to requests for reimbursement. He then appointed his “Pay Czar” to oversea the fund process. Maybe its me, but I fear they will find away to steer part of the funds for their personal agendas. For example, to local Unions. Under the guise of retraining or assisting workers laid off, the money might be used by the Unions to further fund their political ideals and supporters in the 2010 elections. This is similar to the disbursements of the Stimulus Finds. Part of those funds are continually being put into pet projects not just to create jobs as it was sold to the American public.
In a related area, President Obama has announced his appointments to the Commission that will find out what happened in the spill and how it can be avoided in the future. Isn’t it interesting that all of the left leaning appointees have no knowledge of oil operations, forget deep water drilling. You would think they could appoint at least one neutral person who is knowledgable of the oil business, to be member of this commission. This Commission needs to move quickly to discover what happened, how to avoid a similar incident, and allow drilling to resume. Otherwise, those people temporarily laid off, will find their jobs are gone as companies move their rigs to other area.
Again, his lack of executive experience has caused President Obama to look indecisive and he has not given the nation cause to feel the government has things under control.
